I read this book so you don't have to
Hidden reads, critical views, and curated knowledge beyond the usual references
This is not a book club.
This is not your art school syllabus.
This is an ongoing excavation of texts that can reshape — or destabilize — how we think about art and the world around it.
Each month, I read a book or a scientific paper (or sometimes both) and extract what matters — so you don’t have to. But you might want to. Because these are not the titles you’ll find trending in newsletters or promoted by institutions. Many of them were never intended for a wide audience. Some are hidden in academic journals. Others just never made it into the usual reading lists — but they should have.
Here’s what to expect:
- One reading per month: It can be a book, a paper, or a hybrid. Sometimes directly about art, sometimes not — but always connected to it in ways that matter.
- Critical commentary: This is not a summary. It’s a critical, sometimes confrontational reflection on what the text exposes, avoids, or accidentally reveals. The goal is to provoke thought, not agreement.
- Labels and badges: Each piece comes with a few quick visual cues to help you navigate — whether it’s “Not Art Certified,” “Deep Dive,” or “Invisible Reading.” These will evolve over time.
- Rating system: Yes, I give each reading a score — not just for fun, but to help you decide if it's worth your time. This isn’t about literary merit or prestige. It’s about usefulness, sharpness, and whether it makes you rethink something that matters.
🎯 How the rating works:
- ⭐ 1 — Skip it
Unnecessary. Offers little to no insight. Probably part of the problem. - ⭐ 2 — Only if you’re bored
Has moments, but ultimately forgettable or too superficial to be worth your time. - ⭐ 3 — Has its moments
Uneven, but contains enough substance to be worth a scan or selective read. - ⭐ 4 — Recommended
Solid, thought-provoking, and worth engaging with — even if you disagree. - ⭐ 5 — Required Reading
Essential. Everyone interested in art and critical thought should read this.
🔎 Why this matters
This section is also an invitation to build an alternative library — a slow, curated, non-obvious collection of texts that challenge, complicate, or expand what we think we know about art, culture, and systems of value.
It’s about making visible what’s usually hidden, translating research that never escapes the academic bubble, and questioning the supposed neutrality of the “canon.”
So yes — I’ve read this book so you don’t have to.
But if I’m doing my job right, maybe you’ll want to anyway.
